Exploding Breast Implants Recalled

The implants were made with an unapproved silicone gel and could affect 45,000 women worldwide who boast breasts made in the French factory, now closed.

Dr. Cynara Coomer, Fox News Medical A-Team member and breast surgeon at Mount Sinai Medical Center in New York, said that while FoxNews.com ruptured implants are rare, are potentially hazardous.

"A breast implant is an explosion that has been broken, or lining of the capsule is essentially broken, and the silicone can leak into the natural breast tissue," said Coomer. "That can cause a serious infection such as gangrene or toxic shock."

Coomer said a breast implant shell is two layers, so that if an implant leaks, the two layers have to be drilled.

"It's very rare that leaked silicone implant through both layers," she said. "The most common way that can happen is through a needle biopsy procedure if the needle is looming on the implant."

The French government banned the sale of the implants made by Poli Prothese implant, but 90 percent of them have already been sent to surgeons abroad.

Medical professionals urged women can have implants, the surgeons in the UK began using in 2001, to remain calm, but to contact their doctors to have them removed.

"The doctors recommend that an implant should be removed, if only one layer of the capsule is broken to prevent flight risk," said Coomer.

Saline implants have the same risk of flight, but the product is considered much safer because it is similar to the liquid already in the body, and can be absorbed by muscle tissue.
